Anyone can experience mental health problems—and over a lifetime most of us will. Yet for each of us, they are personal and unique.
And When it comes to your mental health, doing what you can to maintain your wellbeing is key. And in times of uncertainty and crisis, nurturing your mental health is more important than ever.

If you are feeling burdened by the current COVID-19 situation, there are lots of things you can do to help yourself through this difficult time. We’ve partnered with Head to Health to bring you 10 small but effective strategies to stay mentally healthy.

Stay as physically active as you can

Physical health and mental health are strongly connected. Staying physically active is scientifically shown to improve mental wellbeing, and vice versa. Try to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, if you can head outdoors to do it – even better!

Drink plenty of water

75% of the human brain is water, so it’s not difficult to see why staying hydrated is vital for mental health. Hydration increases circulation and cleanses the body’s organs, including the brain.

Get outdoors

Sunlight, fresh air and being in or around nature has a wonderfully calming and energising effect on our brains and bodies. Get outside at least once a day – sit in the backyard, go for a walk or really get your blood pumping.

Eat a balanced diet

We all know a balanced diet is one of the keys to good health. Getting plenty of all the right foods and minimising your intake of processed foods is vital. That’s not to say a treat here and there can’t also boost your mood – but it won’t have the same long-term benefits as a good diet.

Cut back on smoking, alcohol and drug use.


In times of crisis or pain, often people are more likely to use alcohol, smoking or drugs to try to deal with it. These things are never the answer and will only make a situation worse. Even if you have a severe mental illness, you can cut down and quit smoking or drug and alcohol use with the right support.

Get a good night’s sleep

If we have quality sleep, we wake up feeling refreshed and energised. We are better able to cope with challenges and interact positively with others. Go to bed at a regular time, avoid things that might keep you awake (like caffeine), make adjustments to your sleep environment (cover LED lights and keep the room dark ) and get enough exercise and also sunlight all day.

Listen to your gut

The gut microbiome can cause changes in how our brains react. Scientists have found that gut bacteria produce many neurotransmitters which are critical for mood, anxiety, concentration and memory.

Stay connected

Healthy connections with family, friends, partners and co-workers are known to lower levels of anxiety and depression and raise self-esteem. We may not be able to enjoy a normal social life just yet but finding ways to connect with loved ones will improve your wellbeing immensely.

Find the purpose in your day

Everyone needs purposeful activity – it’s what gets you out of bed in the morning. Whether it’s caring for your kids, going to work, a hobby or walking the dog, having a purpose makes you feel like a contributor, builds your sense of self-worth, and gives you satisfaction and meaning. If you’re unsure what your day’s purpose is, the important thing is to start looking. It can take some time to find the things you enjoy that give you purpose, but it will be worth it.

Keep learning

Like your body, your brain gets stronger when you exercise it. There is a lot of research to suggest learning new skills keeps your brain young and fit, and less susceptible to degenerative disease. Start a new hobby or course, learn a new skill or immerse yourself in an education program.
